I got a 2009 yamaha grizzly 450 and was only disapointed in the top speed of 47 mph. Is there an air filter or exhaust tip that can increase that without losing low end? Thanks for your help.:peace:

I don't think an air filter or tip is going to give you any noticable power increase

Louder is often confused with faster

Have you owned the bike since new? When was the primary clutch last serviced?

thats cause the OP here resurrected this one. since that one is 6+ years old, id post to this one, not that one.

i would second the things already said here. the tip wont do squat, and the intake will only do a little. you can look into a full exhaust. that would give you more power, if you are ok with the volume.

also seconding the CVT servicing. have you owned it since new? could be that the previous owner put in a shim. taking it out might give you 5-6 mph, but it will hurt your low end.

might also want to check your valves, make sure youre engine is running at its best.

you could also look into a machined sheave.

My 06 450 would do in the mid 50s, so something sure don't sound right. I agree with the above mentioned . I had an HMF and air filter, only gave a mile or two top end

The k&n filter will not increase you overall speed more than .297mph. Seriously tho. Its not gonna do much if anything.

I feel like the solution is in the cvt. Via a tune-up, or aftermarket parts.

Take the cvt cover off and determine the pulley ratio. There are videos showing how to do this.
Also with that many miles on the machine, contaminated grease could be a problem.
I think there could be several things going on.
As mentioned above, a full service should be done. Fluids, cleaning the air filter, a new plug and a valve adjustment should be done.
Get the engine running right and determine the cvt set-up. A worn belt (abused) along with other facts could be adding up to poor performance. I've seen this with several grizzlys with fewer miles than your has.

would a machined sheave lose low end? I need my low end for pulling big things

I think the belt is worn to it slacks compaired to other 450's I drive

No, as compared to stock.
That's why I recommended pulling the cvt cover to count the pulley ratio. You need to determine what you have now. If your ratio is above 2.6:1 now something is out of spec.
You can't plan the trip if you don't know where you're at.

A worn belt actually increases the pulley ratio. I use a worn belt for more low end (higher ratio) and a new belt for less.
Generally, the difference between a new belt and a belt needing replacement is 3 mm.
A new belt with a 3 mm machined sheave will give the same ratio as a worn belt 3 mm below factory specs. (Always use an O.E.M. belt).
That's why the guy in the 3.45 thread is recommending a 750 terrex belt to replace the grizz belt. It's narrower.
Study the cvt system, basically the belt needs more room between the primary sheaves to produce a higher pulley ratio. Notice my signature. It varies with my chosen set-up for the conditions but;
I have the ability to install 2.5 mm's of shim before the spline engagement is less than full.
I then had the primary machined removing @ 3 mm's at the center. Notice I turned the weight cover diameter down to 29 mm's. Then if I install a 3 mm narrower worn belt I get the high pulley ratio. I posted video of a 3.5 ratio before finding a 3.75 ratio by accident while shooting another video.
I have a dope book on the different parts that I use in My cvt set-ups for desired low end. Then I use a cut cam plate to negate these mods after the grizz achieves 20 mph to reach high speed as with a stock set-up.
The heavier than stock weight increase the speed to above stock.
It's all a game of give and take.

The Kawi belt is also shorter. This is important.

i missed where you said how many miles you have on it... but if you werent aware, there is a lot more that goes into a cvt than the belt, that could be worn. the grease on your primary weights could be caked up and not allowing the weights to travel all the way out. thus cutting out your top end "gearing". your sheave faces coudl be polished causing a bit of inaudible belt slip at the top end. your grease seals on your secondary could be leaking grease causing the belt to slip on the secondary to slip once the belt drops all the way down.

even simpler... the previous owner(you still havent answered the 2 questions asking if youve owned it since new) added a shim(or possibly weights). take it out and you are golden. you will loose a bit of bottom end power, but you will gain the top end back. or buy a machined sheave and gain even more low end, and get your maximum top end.

what would be a good machined sheave for higher speed and low end
